George was born on 2 June 1907 to Frederick Whistondale and his Norwegian-born wife, Eliza (née Knutsen). After Brighton College, where he was part of the debating team, he joined the RAF. In 1936 he married Annie Woodrow.

Whistondale died on 1 March 1942 when Kalidjati airfield in Java in the Dutch East Indies was overrun by the Japanese. He was the commanding officer at the airfield at the time and was last seen returning to his office, reportedly to retrieve his stamp collection. Whistondale’s car was ambushed and he and his passenger were killed. He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial.
