Peter was born on 11 August 1913 to Anne and Sidney Torkington-Leech, a South African couple living in London.

During the war he served with 9 Squadron, flying a Wellington bomber as second pilot and gunner, and won temporary local fame as the first man in the Squadron to claim to have shot down an enemy aircraft.

He died on 30 October 1939 in a collision with another plane near Sapiston, Suffolk, and is buried at the nearby Honington All Saints Churchyard.
